The Department of Education states that it is at the Headteacher’s discretion to authorise leave of absence for the purpose of an annual family holiday during term time. Such permission is granted in accordance with arrangements made by the Governing Body of the school. Only in exceptional circumstances may the amount of leave granted exceed more than a two week block in any year and such leave will be referred to the Governing Body. Leave of absence will not be granted retrospectively. If the absence is not authorised and the holiday is taken anyway, the case will be referred to the Education Welfare Service who may issue a Penalty Notice for £100 (or £50 if paid within 28 days) to each parent for each child taken out of school.
